Lately, the EBook reader market has turned into a battlefield for major market players like Amazon and Sony. Amazon had been the pioneer in the field with their groundbreaking Amazon Kindle. However, Sony Reader has completely changed the rules of the game and it is threatening the throne so long occupied by Kindle.  Here we will dig deep into the features, specs and design of these two devices and find out which one deserves to make it to you shopping list this year.

Features

The Sony Reader is the new kid on the block and it has some great features that will surely give the Kindle a run for its money, but the Kindle also has some great tricks up its sleeves.

  1. Connectivity: To start, the Kindle has EVDO service that allows users to browse the EBook libraries and download their favorite books. This feature of Amazon Kindle is virtually useless for customers living outside USA, as the network provider AT&T is not present in most countries.
  2. Touch screen: the Sony Reader has full touch screen interface that bids adieu to the clumsy keyboard once and for all. With the keyboard gone, the screen takes up most of the space and allows the users to have a better experience. Moreover, you can flip the pages as you browse through the books in the Reader.
  3. Music: the Sony Reader allows its users to copy their favorite tracks from the computer and play it through 3.5mm headphone jack. Sony is among the best audio device manufacturers and they have scored a point or two with the audience thanks to the inbuilt music features.
  4. Build and design: the Amazon Kindle has a solid built and it is extremely rugged but it is simply not aesthetic enough. The Sony on the other hand rules the customer’s heart with its metal finish and sheer elegance. On the other hand, the build quality and design of the Amazon Kindle is not quite up to the mark, as it has been known to squeak when the buttons are pressed hard.
  5. Display: the display quality of both eth Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader is wonderful and the screens have no glares, which makes it easier to read even under direct sunlight. Now coming back to the point, you cannot read the Amazon Kindle without any external source of lighting. Contrary to that, the Reader has a peripheral lighting technology that allows users to read even in the dark. This is where Sony reader really outscores Kindle, if you do not want to disturb your spouse, you can still read the Sony reader in the dark.
  6. Audio books: the Amazon Kindle can read out newspaper articles and EBooks to the user while the Sony cannot.

Judging by the pros and cons we have seen that although Kindle comes with 3G support, Audio book support and internet facilities, the Sony still offers a better book reading experience overall.
